William Howard Rostrum - Earl of Wustisher. Captain wounded in the Boar war.
Professor - From "the old country" teaches at the local collage
Hyperion Smith - Rising star reporter looking for the next scoop. Very good looking, willing to do whatever it takes
- Harry and William formed the New England Society of Antiquities
- Harry funds the Professor's Lab (Harry Palmer Lab), he is part of the Society to provide the "brains"
- Hyperion is invited along to write a story about us
- Another member of the society named Mr Knott own an old house known as the Corbitt House
- A former tennet, The Macarios, suffered some sort of tragedy and have trouble finding a new tennet
A landlord, Mr. Knott, asks you to examine an old house in central Boston, known as the Corbitt House. The former tenants, the Macario family, were involved in a tragedy and the owner wishes to understand the mysterious happenings at the house and set matters straight. Mr. Knott has been unable to rent the house out since the tragedy and hopes that you can clear things up and restore its good name. He offers to pay for your time and trouble, at a rate of $20 per day. The landlord gives you the keys, the address, and $20 cash in advance.
Knowing your jobs, you will want to conduct some research before you head to the house. You could check out old newspaper articles at the offices of the Boston Globe, head to the Central Library, or go to The Hall of Records.
The choice is yours.
- We split up into two groups to gather some info. Harry and the Professor head to the Library while Hyperion and William head to the Boston Globe. We all decide to meet back at the Hall of Records.
- Hyperion and William intimidate the Editor Artie to get the key and then spend 1/2 a day to look though newspaper clippings in the basement. They are able to find an article
1918 feature story, which was never published. It states that in 1880, a family of French immigrants moved into the house but fled after a series of violent accidents left the parents dead and three children crippled. The house long stood vacant.
In 1909 another family moved in, and immediately fell prey to illnesses. In 1914, the oldest brother went mad and killed himself with a kitchen knife, and the heartbroken family moved out. In 1918, a third family, the Macarios, rented the house, but they left almost immediately after they all became ill at the same time.
- Harry quickly finds something in the Library
In 1835, a prosperous merchant builds the house, but immediately falls ill and sells it to a Mr. Walter Corbitt, esquire.
- The Professor decides to look into Mr Corbitt and finds:
In 1852, Walter Corbitt is sued by neighbors, who petition to force him to leave the area “in consequence of his surious [sic] habits and unauspicious demeanor.”
Evidently Corbitt wins the lawsuit. His obituary in 1866 states that he still lived in the same place. It also states that a second lawsuit was being waged to prevent Corbitt from being buried in his basement, as provided by his will.
- In the hall of records Hyperion finds:
Civil court records show that the executor of Walter Corbitt’s will was Reverend Michael Thomas, pastor of the Chapel of Contemplation & Church of Our Lord Granter of Secrets. The register of churches (also available in the Hall or Records), notes the closure of the Chapel of Contemplation in 1912.
- Harry talks to a corner store owner who tells him that the former residents of the House now reside at the Sanitarium
- We approach the locked door, strangely it has several locked bolts that that lock from the outside. We use the key given to us to unlock the door and enter
- Hyperion tries and fails to open a boarded up cubbord
- In the living room we find an unusual amount of religious iconography
- Hyperion turns on a record player and forgets how he got into the house for 80 min. The record plays an otherworldly laughing that The Professor silences
- The Professor notices that some of the religious artifacts have a rust color on them. Further investigation reveals it to be dried blood
- The Professor tumbles down the stairs then helps the rest of us down.
- There are a smattering of various tools around and the Professor spots an ornate knife that he points out.
- The knife raises off the ground and starts stabbing at the professor and kills him
- Harry bats it away with his bat allowing Hyperion to catch
- Hyperion drops the knife and foul oder
- Harry momentarily sees his friends as enemies and shoots William
